Note: not positing opinions about anything other than the book itself (DSM) It should come with "Caveat Emptor". It is but a consensus of opinions between men, at a given time. My studies had me learn and use this book ad nauseam, and there are great disagreements about its (lack of) reliability and validity.

The reason for its existence (for diagnoses, period) is so information could quickly be exchanged between health professionals i.e. "labeling" the patient saves time in the system. A lot of professionals, me included, don't think it makes the job easier at all (not better, for sure!) snce once label is given, transmitting it leaves all the important stuff OUT; thus, to do the job right, you have to backtrack anyways!

And when you backtrack, under many "labels" (diagnosis) the lists of symptoms are quasi interchangeable with those of multiple labels, and since the patient ONLY has to present with SOME of them (e.g. 4/7) to meet the criteria for those diagnoses, you end up with GUESSING!!! And the result of the guesswork of one swiftly transmitted down the line (e.g. to treatment team and pharmacologist) with sometimes disastrous results, especially of said patient moves and the info is taken over by yet more people basing everything on a LABEL.

Hence for decades now, there dissent about using the DSM as standard, and other tools are being presented. The main symptoms and their severity being what's to really be addressed, "What's In a Name"? Not much. We need shorthand that is not so, well, not SO short. The DSM is then for making the Pros life easier, NOT the patients, and its content, debatable. At best, It's like Horoscope.

This being said, it has very little bearing on your discussions, and don't say it does, I just, as a professional, feel I have to warn whenever I can about the pitfalls of the Diagnostic Manual. Mental illnesses are NOT real discreet categories (and subject to change with each re-iteration of the book), unlike domain/genus/species of animals or chemicals (or even biological illnesses), and can't be classified into a neat table. Am sorry to have taken your time, it's just one of those things... We all have a things that sets us off, DSM is one of those for me. I'm not saying its TOTALLY useless; I just wish it was not still the gold standard n my profession(s) (I'm both intervention AND research).

Lol. It was just a personal rant about a peeve of mine!
I do not assert it has NO value, but should not be treated as authoritative, ultimate truth.

To me, the labeling stemming from its exclusive use by Fat Cat Psychiatrists represents laziness in Mental Health care, and much of my problem with it is the failure to revisit the symptoms themselves once the label is applied. My work is my choice,of course, but as I'm dispatched EXPRESSLY to deal with mental Health system failures (on-site psycho-social crisis intervention), I'm allowed a rant.

Of course it had (still has) a use! I am not totally discrediting it! Trying to put most knowledge about the subject in a handy book (back before the internet in particular) which could be disseminated across Universities and cabinets, what a good achievement! But I studied it, and it's too full of holes to be the nowadays's staple. Many theoreticians have some up with better diagnostic models, but while it's argued how to proceed, laziness prevails. There is decent research done but change comes SO SLOW in Academia!

Ho!BTW I just still utilize the masculine form; "men", "man made" or "mankind" and I mean nothing my it. Goodnite/day to you.

From what can be seen first-hand, it seems absolute majority of homos' sexual behaviour is involuntary and not something they have control over and it appears to be a matter of genetics (anomaly).

Glad to have you back! Hope we can talk film at some point (I see World Affairs weigh hard on you 0I avoid speaking politics publicly but I feel it too-)

From research, I can tell you this:

We treat homosexual orientation (attraction to same sex) and behavior as 2 separate things: e.g. never having been turned on by a woman (using male examples because there is more info on them) vs prison sex. For the former, testing on minors being non-ethical, you can't tell how early, but attraction to what sex is easily testable on adults (and the apparatus doesn't lie). We can definitely assert that some people are attracted only to their own sex exclusively, but in front of the accomplished fast. (Unfortunately, the same thing was involved (to no avail and with traumatic side-effects) in so-called "reeducation training" i.e. "chase the gay away" stunts (combined with electric shocks etc.) that did nothing good but gave weight to the idea that orientation is, indeed, innate. Given the treatment of gays across time, who would CHOOSE it? (Again, not taking about the behavior, bases on circumstances... he;; today in school we tell kids to "try it!!!) but the deep-seated orientation).

There is much scientific literature starting with the Aids crisis (when many gave their bodies to science) and yes, a certain structure in the brain involved in the sex drive happens to be different in the brains of gay vs hetero males (one such researchers, at the top of my head, Dr. Montagnier, France). Positions are being argued as to the "why". There are litigating circumstances there too: cadaver work only points the way but is diddled with complications, having no baseline (healthy, younger) info to compare with. But the numbers, and comparisons around the world shown that this brain difference to be stable across.

You say "genetic" I'll stop you there because when we say genetic, we mean DNA, when what I think you mean to say is the more appropriate "biologically determined". Both do mean "born that way, not chosen", but beware of the word "genetic", it's an easy mistake to make, I sometimes catch myself saying it! Gays don't "pass along" "gay DNA" that we know of... and the closest we'd have test, anyway, would be gay sperm donors' offspring. Then again, there are no "hetero genes", it's just de de facto condition, as the female body is the de facto form. So if not genetic, but innate, then what?

There are strong biological theories involving pre-natal conditions (levels of triggering hormones and others at different developmental stages) in utero, where the body is feminized/masculinized, and where the brain difference seen but unexplained in gay men men likely emerges. Again,complex to explore, but promising.

All I know is this: it is not nearly as important to know why there are gay people as it is to cure cancer, so not holding my breath. But we KNOW there ARE gay people, and the problem is not "why" but how the majority treats them. Lately, the "LG" in "LGBTQ+ is seeing drawbacks from "rest of alphabet" acting out like children and not respecting the work that went in acquiring basic equality rights. The loud and colorful are disrespectful of their own barrier breakers and make it very difficult for all or either side. They should not speak for all, and we should not see them as representative. I am not making the apology of anything else but sexual orientation being deep-seated here and not wanting to deal with woke debate,

The literature is there, if you're willing to dig. My field is wider and this is not my area so without searching a lot myself, I can't save you time, save to say Pay mind to scientific articles (those from scientific journals, Medscape and such, that start with an "abstract" described the methods and end with "conclusions" over other sources, so not to end with pseudo-science. Not that other sources can't be good, but they CAN be WRONG, as they are not peer reviewed and, meant for the public, often come with an agenda (to curb opinion either way). Good cientific research will tell you it went wrong, if it did,
