The MKVToolNix I have been talking about should recognize most valid codecs & put them in an MKV container. The GUI opens with the multiplexer with the input tab. Drag the file into it & beneath it will show all video, audio & subtitle codecs. At the bottom click "Start multiplexing". Click the job output button at the left side & it will show the processes & if it encountered any errors. As I said before, it can even repair these unless the file is badly corrupted. Sometimes the file will be perfect, sometimes with a glitch. Just Google MKVToolNix GUI. It has versions for any OS. I use my Windows 8 machine. The Linux Ubuntu team does not keep it updated. I can briefly put it online when I open the program & it will tell me if there are new versions. It is available as an installer and as a portable. I use the portable. There are several EXE files in the folder after you extract it. Click the mkvtoolnix-gui.exe. Pretty amazing program, especially for free. More features than I have figured out, but the ones I have done a lot of repairs, like fix out of sync videos.

OK, I misunderstood your post. Don't get upset about it. I AM logged in, or I wouldn't be able to reply. However, some people might find my post useful. Anyone who has a serious video collection would find MKVToolNix invaluable & should get it. Another member first posted about it or I wouldn't have brought it up. Being able to mux in subtitle files is just one of many things it does. I can often repair files that others would have deleted. Have a set of files the VLC playlist show titles as downloaded by....? You can delete or add your own title metadata that shows up in the playlist. Get a file that the audio defaults to Japanese? I can remove all audio tracks except English. MANY other features I have not found in any other video conversion & editing programs. And it's free.

Please add a filterable tag(s) to your film titles that only have a name and the year in parentheses.
For example: Blue Tornado (1991)
It is currently impossible to "filter" for 'any/all' of these.

Hello All You Love Peeps! I asked and you offered MKVToolNix which I know love! Now I wish to ask, does anyone out there know of a free video converter that is faster than Handbrake?
Handbrake does what it says but it's so slow even in "fast" mode.
Any suggestions please.

I use VidCoder which is based on Handbrake, but has more features. I doubt it is any faster. For some conversions I use Xillsoft ultimate. Both programs nearly peg out my CPU, Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake. MKVToolNix is muxing, not converting which is why it is so much faster. I think the only way to speed things up would be to get a faster CPU.

@OldGeezer916
I too like VidCoder over Handbrake, as the GUI is better for me. And I expect you are right, that VidCoder isn't any faster than Handbrake. Also note, VidCoder is just for Windows, whereas Handbrake also works on macOS and Linux.
@openingcrewBeyond
To find something that might be faster, I would dig around the videohelp site.
Personally, I use Avidemux, although I've read it's slower that Handbrake, yet some dev at Avidemux said otherwise. I've found that "speed" involves many things, such as if you are also encoding the audio, what methods and program settings you use, and what containers you have and choose, and your system specs.
For example, with Avidemux, for coding from AVC to HEVC and/or from 6ch to AAC stereo, if the original file is mp4, then I first mux it to mkv with MKVToolNix. After that, I then drop that new mkv file in Avidemux, choose my encoding settings, and save it as mp4. Then if I need to add a subtitle, I'll drop that new mp4 into MKVToolNix, add the sub, and mux, done. Note that Avidemux can't mux subtitle files, so I use MKVToolNix for that. Why do all that? I've found that all works best with no errors. Also, when I encode with Avidemux, I usually give it a "low" encoding priority, which takes longer to encode, but I can still use my PC for other stuff, and I'm in no hurry. More so, I want to avoid any errors, and I only encode about 1 video per week. If I did more, I'd buy a much faster system. Also note, with Avidemux you can change the encoding priority any time during the encode process, and even pause it as need be. Also I've noticed that Avidemux is much faster if I encode a video no more than half the original size. For that, I use the "Video Size (Two Pass)" encoding mode.
Also, the one time I had to encode many video files, I used a spare, dedicated PC for that, and set the Avidemux encoding priority to "High".
So, Avidemux and MKVToolNix does most all I need, and MeGUI, gMKVExtractGUI, and GoldWave cover the rest as need be.
Also note, if you are willing to pay for more speed, buying a newer PC or video card is obvious, but there are also cloud services that encode video to whatever you want, for a fee. So, you might want to explore your options being spending too much.

I have a trial PremiumKey account and I downloaded some TV episodes BUT when I tried to d/l after about 4 eps, it automatically takes me to streaming, which I DO NOT want. This is the very reason why I have not bought a PremiumKey account before as I was told this happens. I ONLY want to d/l.!!! Why is this happening or why???

Ubuntu 18.04 is my main machine. I have a Windows 7 & 8 machines I run offline networked to the Linux. Linux is great for a lot of things, but I have yet to find replacements for some important programs. Windows is more reliable at really big copy jobs. I use Dolphin as a file manager for Linux. It doesn't even warn you if there isn't enough disk space on the destination. Just fills it to the last meg & stops. It would choke if you tried to run off a backup for a really large disk. For large HEVC conversion jobs I split the seasons, & half on 7 & half on 8. The other program I mentioned, Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate is not free but worth the money. (about $40) Windows & Mac only. Extremely accurate editing, within a couple frames. Lots of other features I have not found on any other programs.

@lazee & OldGeezer916...
Thanks so much for both of your suggestions! I will definitely look into the ones you mentioned. Appreciate your help. ![]()

Tried some other Linux file managers. Didn't find any that were much different than Dolphin. Took Microsoft a long time to get one right. XP still had some of the same miserable traits as DOS. I skipped Vista. 7 was a big leap forward & 8 added some refinements. Never installing spyware 10, hence the switch to Ubuntu. Don't know what changing browsers would do. Using Firefox mainly plus Chrome for just a few sites that seem to work better in it.

I tried Xilisoft Video Converter a few years ago, but I didn't like it. It has a low rating on videohelp, but there's only 5 votes, so IDK.. Being that you say it's worth buying, I'll at least consider if need be, but I'm happy with what I already mentioned for my basic needs on Windows 10 and Zorin OS.
As for large copy jobs in Linux, there is dedicated software for that, such as with CopyMastro.
Overall, I think Windows 10 does the most, involving the widest choice of the best, free software I know of and use regularly. I liked Windows 7 better, but being that it's no longer supported with proper security updates, I only use it offline and air-gapped now.
That said, I like Zorin OS a lot, but Linux still lacks what I need as my daily driver.
As for spying concerns with Microsoft, I think much of that is hype. Yes they collect data, but so do most browsers, social networks, stores, ad networks, security software, file hosts, and ISPs. Even many so-called "trusted" VPNs collect a lot of data.
I actually read all of the EULAs from such companies, and study their claims. For example, Cox (an ISP) used to have an OK privacy policy, but then they lost that huge lawsuit that demanded data records of their users and such. So now they have the worst privacy policies and such I have ever seen, involving the collection and selling of user data. But the main take away here is, long before that lawsuit, Cox was indeed collecting and storing their users' traffic data, going back several years, which is now all for sale.
These companies have numerous legal tricks to support their claims of privacy, as they partner through circuitous channels to profit from user data.
Also, with device fingerprinting and such, the privacy battle has been lost IMO. In other words, if you think your activities are private, then think again and study up, that is if you can clearly peer down that rabbit hole.
That all said, I'm much more concerned with security than privacy. I think my most effective policy to keep private is to not buy anything online, as that's what these spying companies are most interested in tracking.
Beyond all that, my biggest concern is with DRM. In short, it's possible that one day, most all hardware will have DRM (and worse) baked into it, which would potentially put an end to all digital piracy and more.

No problem. It's often fun pretending we can actually help each other, when in fact such info can be found with some basic searching, ha.
BTW, what makes you so chipper? Are you on some new drug I should know about?
Ha... Take care.

@openingcrew
Thanks for that heads up about karac22, although that seems like some rather obvious comments to ignore.
Also, as a rule of thumb, I never access any links in these comments.
Beyond that, not to name names, but I find the less obvious BS comments are the ones as these:
"Can anyone tell me how to had subtitles to a show"
"I am old but new to all this movie stuff"
As if.. ha. But I get it, as some folks like to engage in superfluous chit chat. Personally, I'm more of a fan of belaboring rhetoric, but it's all good to me, ha.

Yeah,I know there is snooping everywhere. I got turned off to Windows 10 by the nagware & even malware tactics to force it on us. Then there was the installation where if you weren't careful they would hijack your defaults & make it hard to put them back. If you didn't go into the 13 "privacy" screens & turn a lot of stuff off you would even be hot miked. In their EULA they have the right to search your software & private folders & even rat you out to law enforcement.
They were supposed to support 8.1 until 2023, but they forced Intel to not support anything but Windows 10 with the 7th generation "Kaby Lake" that came out in Jan 2017. When they found out some motherboards with it still worked fine with 7 & 8, they put out an "update" that bricked all future security updates. I stocked up on My AsRock board. I even have a spare genuine 8.1 machine with a new board in case they pull some crap & not let my other one transfer the key if I ever need to replace the motherboard. It's Microsoft's strong arm tactics that turned me off to 10.
My son is a genius programmer. I got him his 1st PC for his 4th birthday in 1989. He was writing his own video games at 7. He set me up with a 3 desktop "user friendly" Ubuntu that I just updated to 18.04.
As for DRM I don't worry about hardware because I use VLC for everything. Back when I had a big dish I was recording with DVD's. When I bought a new one it would not record some channels. Software DRM has always been broken.
The end is coming, because they have been raiding the top scenes. Some release groups recently disappeared, but so far others have taken up the slack. Site blocking will eventually come to the US. I know you can use a VPN, but what happens when you run out of countries that are not blocking? More lockers will be taken down once the US finally gets Kim Dotcom. Uploaded has pretty much done a Rapidshare. This one was the last site I knew that used it. Not going to renew my Rapidgator until it expires. I have Extmatrix that I only know 2 sites that use it, but one of them is really good. Even links from years ago are still live.
They will eventually win the Wack-a-mole game that has been going on for so long.
